Model railroads need electricity to run. As such, a person building a model railroad layout needs to learn what size and type of wire to use, and how to wire it all. Depending on the sophistication of the railroad, this can be a single simple circuit, very complex multiple circuites, or anything in-between.
More sophisticated layouts include the integration of various electronic components that also need to be powered, so part of wiring model railroad layouts also includes providing proper power for those devices.
