There are two distinct differences
between the Jay-Bee and Kadee metal wheel sets: axle and price. If you
need to have your freight cars block detected, for whatever reason,
you need Jay-Bee wheel sets because they have a non-magnetic metal axle.
This allows you to hang a resistor between the two axles on a truck
for block detection. Or, you need Jay-Bee wheel sets that have a built-in
resistor for block detection.
If you do not need freight car
block detection, Kadee metal wheel sets are lower in cost - because
they have plastic axles.
Note that adding wheel sets with plastic axles does
not add as much weight to the truck as adding those with metal axles.
Also, plastic wears faster than metal. If you don't keep the plastic
axles lubricated in the journals, they will wear out much faster than
metal axles.
