20-series couplers mimic the 40-series couplers, but have plastic rather than metal shanks. Plastic-shank couplers are used where the coupler mounts directly to the metal chassis of a loco so there will be no short circuit between locos when MUed together. Of course, if you use the plastic insulating draft gear so the shank doesn't touch the chassis metal, you can use metal-shank couplers.
