These locos were built by EMD.

371 SW8s with 800 horsepower were built from 1950 through 1954. Only 15 SW600s with 600 horsepower were built from 1954 to 1962. And 357 SW900s with 900 horsepower were built from 1954 to 1965.

1024 SW1200s with 1200 horsepower were built from 1954 through 1966, 815 SW9s with 1200 horsepower were built, and 493 SW7s were built. Except for some louvers, the SW7 is identical to the SW9 and SW1200, but Life-Like doesn't list it on the box.

These Life-Like models do not come DCC ready. They have a set of diodes on a PC Board to provide constant, directional, lighting without DCC. There are two basic installations of decoders for these models. Which installation method you choose will determine which decoder you need to order.

Decoder Selection
The photo at right shows the entire chassis with the stock PC board.

One could install an HO-size decoder in this loco if one wanted to eliminate most of the front weight. Since we think most people won't want to do that, only smaller decoders with enough power are listed below - in addition to the NCE decoder made for this loco. Refer to the Decoder section for more information about any of these decoders.

Sound Equipment Selection

There is no sound decoder made for this loco, and it's unlikely you'll ever get sound into it - unless your modeling skills are VERY good. One might be able to gut the cab interior and get Throttle Up's micro sound decoder in with a small speaker. If you have to call us up to ask how to do that, your modeling skills are not good enough to do it, so don't bother.

Alternatively, you could mount a DSX sound decoder in a small freight car to pull behind it (some hostlers actually preferred to keep a freight car there when switching, as a cushion). If you don't want the freight car there when coupling, simply uncouple it somewhere close by and leave it MUed so the sounds will still mimic the actions of the switcher while switching. If you want to do this, go to the DSX sound decoder section and select an EMD unit with the horn you want.

Shipping & Handling is $5.00 for a sound decoder and speaker alone. If ordered with other items S&H is $7.50 for everything.
