There were 58 units of this EMD (Electro-Motive Division) loco produced from 1947 to 1949. This model had an F3 drive train, but body modifications such as front and rear platforms and rear view that made it look strange. The BL2 was replaced by the GP7 - a true road switcher. There were models, with steam generators, used for passenger service.
There are no provisions for decoder installation, so it is a hardwired job. As such, any decoder with a 1-amp stall current or greater that will fit will work. That means it's pretty much wide open for your personal preference.

Decoder Selection
Since this is a hardwire job, we recommend that you use a decoder that has a JST harness connector so you can easily remove and/or test the decoder and loco if needed later on. As such, we did not list any decoders below that do not have the JST connector. Also, since the bulbs are fairly high current draw, we recommend not using the NCE decoders unless you replace the bulbs with white LEDs.

Sound Equipment Selection

Being a hardwired installation, it can use SoundTraxx's Micro sound decoders. This is a 1st-generation EMD, so the 1st-generation sound unit would be prototypical. However, some people don't like the way the 1st generation idles down, then back up, between notches 4 and 5. In that case, use the 2nd -generation EMD. If you want a lower-cost sound unit, the generic diesel sound unit will also fit. It's not specifically EMD sound, but if that doesn't matter to you this unit will provide good sound. All of these units have three horns onboard for you to chose from when programming.

Neither the speaker nor the enclosure is included with these sound units. While other sizes will fit, we recommend the TU112. For the enclosure, you can use sheet lead to make a traditional enclosure, or devise a ring to glue (silicon type goo) the speaker to the plastic piece that runs the length of the loco. Note: the diode mounting prongs can be cut off to get them out of your way to do this.
