The Shay, developed by Ephraim Shay, is a work-horse engine - developed for logging but also used in mining, and recently for scenic excursions. The Shay is noted by its vertical cylinders, on the right side, which drive a crank-shaft connected to drive shafts that drive bevel gears at each of the loco's axles.
This model, shown in Photo 1, comes DCC ready.
As shown in Photo 2, there is a PC board inside the rear tender. A dummy plug comes plugged into the socket.

Photo 3 shows a Train Control Systems TH150DP plugged into that socket.
Photo 4 shows a DH163 plugging in with our "PB" harness.

To install a decoder with a very short NMRA plug harness, it needs to be plugged in with the wires going toward the rear (the harness has to be made to go this way) then doubled over so the connector end of the decoder is right above the socket, as shown in Photo 4. Decoders longer than about 1.125" will not fit.
Decoder Selection
Any HO-Scale Direct/Integral Plug decoder, and most decoders with an NMRA plug on a very short (PB) harness will work - longer harnesses will work too, but it just creates a lot of excess wire to wad up. We stock dozens of decoders that fit this criteria. Below is a list of those that make the most sense. Others will work. If you choose another that is much longer than 1.25", it will need a longer harness so you can better center the decoder in the tender. Digitrax's DN121IP will NOT work because the pins are at the end of the decoder and there's not enough room for the decoder to stick out the back in the orientation it would have to be plugged in. Refer to the Decoder section for more about these and other decoders that may work.
