1807 1500 h.p. F3 units were produced between 1945 through 1949, and 3849 F7s (A and B) were built between 1949 and 1953.
These Athearn models come with an Atlas-style PC board that does NOT have an NMRA socket. This means you'll either have to install one of the PC board replacement drop-ins, or hard wire a regular decoder. The lower photo at right shows the inside of the loco before decoder installation. The PC board you see is the factory -installed PC board.

Decoder Selection
Digitrax, Train Control Systems, and NCE all make drop-in decoders for these locos. Whether it's an F3A, F3B, F7A or F7B, they all use the same type of decoder. The only advantage to installing a wired decoder is lower cost - the only ones listed are lower-cost decoders. Also, if opting for a hard-wire installation, you should get a decoder that has a JST connector so you can easily remove or swap the decoder without having to do any rewiring. For this reason, we only listed drop-in and JST-type decoders below. For more about these decoders, refer to the decoder section.

Sound Equipment Selection

Because this loco uses the Atlas-style PC board, it can also use the Atlas-style sound decoder from Throttle Up! (SoundTraxx). Like regular decoders, a sound unit can be hard-wired in the same way. Since someone may want to install a lower-cost decoder, that is listed below too. Since the F3A and F3B use the same type of board, either sound unit will wire in exactly the same way in either loco.

Neither the speaker nor enclosure is included with either of these decoders. While you may be able to get a larger speaker in with extra work, you won't achieve much better sound than with this oval speaker unless it's with a larger oval speaker. And remember, the most important part of the installation is a proper speaker enclosure.
