About Decoder Selection
Some simple things that will help you decide which decoder is right for you, your loco, and your way of operation.
2-6-6-6 Allegheny
Any 1" or shorter decoder with our "PR" NMRA harness. NOTE: This loco (at least the first run) is known to have wiring problems. You would be wise to make sure your loco is wired correctly before plugging a decoder in and test running it. Also, the tender light is powered from only one rail (half-wave) with a single diode in the tender. You can provide full-wave power by adding another diode from the other rail power pickup. Connect the striped end of the diode to the striped end of the existing diode. Connect the other end of the diode (with a wire) to power pickup from the opposite rail that the existing diode is connected to.
No recommendations.
2-8-8-2 Mallet
Any wired decoder. More difficult and time-consuming than usual for decoder installation.
TUX12 and 3/4" speaker in boiler.
4-6-6-4 Challenger Any wired decoder, in boiler. TUX10 and any speaker in the tender.
