OPS-Mode Programming does not normally provide for reading CV values back. However, with the advent of Transponding by Digitrax, and the new decoders now coming out (those with the last digit of "3", such as the DH163IP and DN163K0A), OPS-Mode Reading can be done within any block that has a Transponding receiver wired to it.
Equipment Requirements for OPS-Mode Read-Back
Any place you will want to do OPS-Mode Read-Back must be block-detected by a Digitrax BDL162 or BDL168 block detector (usually used for detection to achieve signaling). A Digitrax RX4 Transponding Receiver must be attached to that BDL162 or BDL168 for the block where the OPS-Mode Read-Back is to be done. The Loco must have a Transponding decoder with the last digit of "3", such as the DH163IP or DN163K0A, with Transponding turned on. With that loco in the Transponding-receiver-wired-block, the CV value will be returned almost instantly when you press the DISP button in the context of doing the normal Read-Back procedure.

OPS-Mode Read-Back is not intrusive. You do not need to bother with it unless you want to use it.
