With DCC, there are many
CVs (memory locations called Configuration
Variables) available to change the way a loco runs. Sometimes
when learning about programming, or experimenting just to see what
happens, one could accidentally program something wrong without realizing
it. This could put a decoder into an unusable situation. When it's
obvious a loco isn't running right after doing some programming, CV
Reset allows you to easily reset all (or almost all) CVs back to the
factory default. It's a short cut to starting over.
Without CV Reset, all CVs can be re-programmed to factory defaults individually. The best way to go about it is to get a list of applicable CVs and their defaults from the decoder's manual or documentation. With that in hand, you simply start at the beginning and program the default value into each CV supported by the decoder. Another alternative, without CV Reset, is with the use of a computer. With Digitrax's PR1, and the accompanying software provided by DigiToys, you can read the values of all CVs to save as a disk file. If you ever need to reset the decoder, you can pull up that file and program it back into the decoder. Other programs such as DigiToys' WinLok can do similar programming through the MS100 interface. |
| Equipment Requirements for CV Reset |
| Not all decoders have CV Reset. For those that do, CV Reset is handled completely by the decoder and is non-intrusive - you do not need to bother with it unless you want to use it. The only thing necessary to make it work is a system or other method that can program CV30 - with one exception mentioned below. With SoundTraxx decoders, programming a "02" into CV30 while in the service programming mode will prime it to reset all CVs back to factory default. With this done, all CVs will be reset to factory default when track power is restored. With Train Control Systems decoders, programming a "02" into CV30, or into Physical Register #8 for systems that can't program CV 30, will prime the decoder to reset all CVs except for the User-Loadable Speed Table. Doing this in the service programming mode will insure that power is cycled off and back on to complete the reset process when track power is restored. Neither Digitrax nor NCE decoders have CV Reset. Many other manufacturers also do not have CV Reset. All Digitrax systems can access
CV Reset if needed. |
