Most newer Atlas locos can use
the TCS-A1XX, DH165A0,
and NCE-DASR. Most of the older ones
can too, but may be better fitted with the DH165K0.
The others can be used, but require the installer to add some wires.
Even though drop-ins are available for these locos, wired decoders
can be used if you prefer lower cost or a decoder with other features.
Some locos also have the NMRA plug, as indicated in the listing. |

| Dash 8-40BW (12/8/03) | This loco is DCC ready, but getting the shell off for the first time
will be a chore. It has the traditional six tabs that Atlas incorporates.
You'll probably have to use toothpicks to hold some disengaged while
undoing others. And, one tab is behind a step-up - making it impossible
to reach (chances are you'll wind up breaking it off). Once you get
the shell off, I recommend you use your hobby knife to cut a 45°
angle on the top corner of the tab that locks onto the chassis hooks.
This will make removal of the shell easier the next time.
Any HO-Scale NMRA plug decoder will work, including the direct/integral plug decoders. If using one with wires, we recommend our NMRA "PV" harness. |
Sound can be put in it if you're good at making compact speaker
enclosures. The TUADG
sound unit is a drop-in replacement for the light board that will
leave maximum room for the speaker and enclosure. |
