About Decoder Selection
Some simple things that will help you decide which decoder is right for you, your loco, and your way of operation.
Athearn Genesis steam locos typically come with a wire harness that's accessible from the cab. Pull it out, unplug the dummy plug, cut the heat shrink from it, and remove the unused wires. If you don't remove the heat shrink, the tender will have a tendency to derail when going around curves.
2-8-2 Mikado
Any decoder with a JST connector will work. If your decoder came with a harness plugged into the JST connector, remove it. Plug the decoder directly onto the loco's harness. Stick the decoder into the decoder pocket provided in the front of the tender.
Any of the DSX Mikado sound units will do - choose the one with the whistle you like best. It must be installed along with a decoder as described at left. Enclose, mount, and hook up the speaker.
4-6-2 USRA Light Pacific
Any decoder with a JST connector will work. If your decoder came with a harness plugged into the JST connector, remove it. Plug the decoder directly onto the loco's harness. Stick the decoder into the decoder pocket provided in the front of the tender.

There is none made specifically for the 4-6-2, so choose the whistle you like best. For installation, refer to the 2-8-2 Mikado.
