The UT4 and UT4R are simple, limited, single-knob throttles that can be used with any LocoNet system, including Genesis, BigBoy, Empire Builder, Zephyr and Chief. The only difference between these two throttles is that the UT4 has Infrared transmission for wireless control while the UT4R has a radio transmitter as well as Infrared transmission. As such, the UT4R has a short flat plug-in cable instead of the long coiled cord of the UT4.
Throttle Features (both):

• Control the train's speed, direction, and 13 (0-12) functions.
• Four rotary dials to select any address from "00" to "9983" (9983 is the DCC maximum).
• Select and control MU consists that have been assembled by a full-featured throttle.
• Selection is as easy as dialing the loco address on the four rotary dials and plugging the throttle into LocoNet - no buttons to press.
• The toggle switch is for train direction and braking - braking is the center-off position.
• Braking includes momentum, even if momentum is not programmed into the decoder.
• The throttle knob is mounted on a 298° pot.
• Even though they don't use a digital encoder for throttle speed, they can still select a running loco without having throttle speed conflicts. Digitrax developed a special algorithm that automatically makes the loco gradually acquire the throttle's speed setting.
• Can control functions 0 through 12. There is no function activation button before using Functions 0 through 6. Functions 7 through 12 require pushing the "SHIFT" button simultaneously with the function buttons.
• Do not need a battery unless used wireless with infrared or radio.
• They have "stealing" capability like full-featured throttles
• The cord comes out the top like all other throttles except the UT2.

The UT4 Does NOT Have:
• Programming or Status Editing capability
• Turnout control capability
• A "display". Loco status can be ascertained by a status LED, the throttle knob position and the toggle switch position.
