| The DT300R utilizes a simplex
radio system. That is, it is one-way communication. The DT300R can
transmit train control messages to the radio receiver, but cannot
receive transmissions from the command station.
Since loco selection requires two-way
communications, the DT300R must be plugged into LocoNet while selecting
the loco. However, once selected the DT300R can then be unplugged
to control the train from anywhere within range of the receiver (about
300 feet in open air, less with obstacles in the way or mild interference).
While unplugged it can also program decoders in the OPS-Mode, and
control turnouts. Since programming on the programming track requires
two-way communications, it must be plugged into LocoNet for that.
The Throttle Knob Click Recall is
disabled when in the tetherless mode. That is, while tetherless, you
have control of only the train(s) selected and showing in the display
when the throttle is unplugged from LocoNet. Recalling any previously
selected loco in either knob requires plugging back in.
The DT300R requires a UR91
radio receiver for wireless operation. Radio control works well indoors
and outdoors. The only thing that will hinder its use is large metal
objects. The signal will go through a framed wall, but not a large
metal furnace, for example. Further, large metal items can cause ghosting
which can hinder operation. Sometimes, simply moving the UR91 to a
different location is all that's needed to solve the problem. However,
sometimes a second UR91 may be needed to provide 100% coverage.
The cord is one foot long,
instead of the seven-foot cord of the DT300. However, there are some
reasons one might want to use a DT300R as a walk-around plug-in throttle.
For example, you may want to use it with a friend's layout which doesn't
have a Radio receiver. Or, you may want to plug in at a yard to have
faster more positive switching response, and to keep from filling
the air-waves for other radio throttles in the area. If you wish to
use it as a walk-around plug-in throttle, you can connect a coiled
cord (PH-CC) with
a female/female connector.
