QSI produces a product, called Quantum Engineer™, that is designed to allow you to control QSI's sounds (functions) while using analog control to run the train. It has been brought to our attention that some dealers who do not understand DCC technology are promoting the Quantum Engineer™ as a way to control any and all "newer" DCC products. This notion couldn't be further from the truth.
The Quantum Engineer (a multi-button box connected to your analog throttle) controls QSI's functions (horn/whistle, bell, etc.) by sending a non-DCC signal, which QSI's sound decoders can interpret, over the rails, . QSI calls this "Quantum Analog Remote Control" (QARC), which is QSI-proprietary (meaning only QSI has it) and is NOT part of DCC. Again, Quantum Engineer™ only controls the sounds (functions) that you trigger with a button, and only on QSI sound decoders. The speed and direction of the loco are controlled with your analog throttle, NOT by the Quantum Engineer™. You can prove this by simply disconnecting Quantum Engineer™ from your DC analog throttle and still run your train--you just won't be able to control the functions. And since the Quantum Engineer™ is not sending DCC signals to control the functions, these signals cannot control the functions of any other DCC decoder--sound or otherwise. However, any other decoder that has analog conversion will run with Quantum Engineer™ because it's not Quantum Engineer™ that's running the trains in the first place - it's the analog control that does that. In a nutshell, Quantum Engineer™ does NOT control anything by DCC: neither the speed or direction of the loco, nor any of the sounds (functions). Therefore, you should NOT assume that because you can run a QSI unit that can interpret the NON-DCC signals Quantum Engineer sends, that the Quantum Engineer can control other DCC equipment. Put shortly, the Quantum Engineer does not control anything by DCC. Again, Quantum Engineer by QSI is NOT a DCC controller and should NOT be expected to run anything DCC. It's designed to operate QSI's QARC features, and that is all. If you are using Quantum Engineer™ with an analog control throttle to run your trains, DO NOT buy any decoders or sound units from us or anybody else - they will NOT work properly* with your equipment. If you would like to be able to use ANY and ALL DCC decoders and sound units, I suggest you switch to REAL DCC with a Digitrax Zephyr or Chief. *While all of the decoders we sell (except SoundTraxx DSD-LCs) are able to run on analog systems which do not have pulse power control, they will not be running under DCC control. They will be running under their own analog conversion control, as they would with any other analog throttle that does not use pulse power. What this means is that even though you can run the train, you will not have control of the functions (lights, sound, etc.) and you will not have the finer loco speed control you can have with DCC |
